Good Mews is a shelter just for us cats, hence the name, Good Mews. It is located in Marietta, Georgia, a suburb of Atlanta. It is a private organization. It has no affiliation with any town, county, state or federal agency. It relies on a team of dedicated volunteers for its existence and is 100% dependent on adoption fees and donations. Founded in 1988, Good Mews' main purpose is to find good homes for good kitties. It is a non-profit, cage-free, no-kill facility. Once a cat arrives at Good Mews it has a home for life. No cat is ever euthanized to make room for another cat.

The cats at Good Mews have the run of the shelter, so they can play, eat and sleep with each other and interact with volunteers and visitors. They get plenty of attention from the volunteers who spend many hours cuddling and grooming them and giving them lots of chin scritches, ear rubs and tummy tickles. They have some great toys like feather on a stick and catnip mice. They have a variety of places to sleep, lounge and hide, like big cat trees, cozy baskets and kitty beds, and lots of soft human laps. One of the cats, Martina, likes to keep warm by getting on top of the water heater. She is a very smart kitty.

HOW TO HELP

You can help the kitties in many ways at Good Mews.

  1. Financial Help

To make a donation or become a Kitty Keeper you can use the online forms and send them electronically or print them and send them in the regular mail. Remember when making a donation; always print "CLAW" on your check or the form that you use. This way we can keep track of everything that helps Good Mews through the CLAW Shelter Adoption Program.

  2. Donate Supplies

Here is a list of some of the items needed:
    Kitty Litter (non scoopable preferred)
    Cat Food (canned or dry)
    Copier Paper
    Postage Stamps
Cleaning Supplies (bleach, laundry detergent, hand soap, window cleaner)
Office supplies (pens, pencils, scotch tape, staples, index cards)
    Paper towels
    Trash Bags
    Paper Plates
    Cat Toys
    Cat furniture or beds
    Plastic Trash Barrels
Bedding Materials (old towels, blankets, quilts)
    Feeding Dishes or Bowls

  3. Purchase Good Mews Merchandise:

Good Mews has a variety of T-shirts and coffee mugs with the Good Mews logo. These are only available at the shelter now, but there are plans to create an online store soon.

  4. Buy from iGive.com.

This is an Internet-based company that allows you to donate a part of the purchase price to charity. Good Mews is one of the organizations benefiting from this program. When you sign up to join iGive, make sure you specify Good Mews as the charity of your choice.

  5. Use the Morris Master Card
    >
You can help Good Mews cats by applying for and using the Morris MasterCard. Every time you use the card, a percentage of your purchase goes towards the feeding and care of the cats at Good Mews. You can get rebates and discounts from animal clinics, veterinarians and some pet services and products, too. To apply for your card, call 1-800-64-CATS-9, extension 23. Make sure you tell them you want Good Mews (code 1431) to be the animal shelter you wish to help.

  6. Entertainment Books

Purchase an Entertainment book for Atlanta (or other cities) and 25% of the sale of the book goes back to Good Mews. You can do this online at the Good Mews web site. Make sure you use the Good Mews code number (483561) when placing your order.

  7. Request the Free Newsletter

This costs you nothing and keeps you up to date on what's happening at Good Mews. "Purrs & Prattles" is a quarterly publication. It includes updates on cat adoptions and the cats as well as interesting and informative articles. Click here (jroberts@goodmews.org) to be added to the mailing list.

  8. Volunteer

If you live near the Atlanta area get your human to volunteer at the shelter. There are many things they can do to help, including cleaning, feeding, transportation to vets, socializing and adoptions. You can also take messages from the answering service and help with special projects and fund raisers. If you don't live near Good Mews, encourage your human to volunteer at a local shelter.

Melrose Humane Society , a no-kill shelter for all animals in Massachusetts, has several ways you can help the animals in the shelter.

Ways to Help

Any donations of money or any amount are welcome. Pledge a donation and become a CLAW Shelter Helper.

One way is by sponsoring special needs animals. "Special Needs" means an animal that is not easy to adopt because it has medical or behavioral problems.
You can sign up to sponsor a special needs animal on Special Sponsorships. The cost is $10 a month.

You can also sponsor a spay. All the animals are neutered, but it costs money. To help the shelter neuter its animals, you can send them $40.

You can join the shelter for a cost of $10 per year, or $2 for Jr members.
